TOYOTA HILUX ECU REMAP

Custom dyno-verified ECU calibrations for Hilux 2.4 GD6 & 2.8 GD6

ATM Chiptuning develops vehicle-specific ECU calibrations for the Toyota Hilux in Mossel Bay, with the specification chosen for the engine, gearbox, condition and the way the bakkie is used across the Garden Route.

Why Tune Your Hilux?

The Toyota Hilux is a phenomenal workhorse, but from the factory it is tuned conservatively for global markets, emissions compliance, and lowest-common-denominator fuel quality. That means the 2.4 GD6 and 2.8 GD6 engines are leaving significant performance on the table. Here is what a custom ECU remap unlocks.

We tune for reliability first. Our heavy-roller dyno is calibrated to measure at the wheels. Because manufacturer figures are normally quoted at the engine and drivetrain loss varies, we focus on the verified change between the baseline and final run on the same vehicle, dyno and session. Every dyno client receives the complete before-and-after result in person.

TORQUE & POWER

The Hilux 2.4 GD6 leaves clear room for improvement from the factory. Our custom remap fills in the frustrating flat spot between 1800 and 2500rpm that every Hilux owner knows too well, delivering strong, usable torque and power across the rev range. The 2.8 GD6 responds even more dramatically. These are not theoretical promises: every calibration is verified under full load on our dyno, and you see your real before-and-after results in person rather than headline numbers posted online.

THROTTLE RESPONSE

One of the most common complaints from Hilux owners is the delay between pressing the throttle and the vehicle actually responding. Toyota intentionally maps a lag into the drive-by-wire system for emissions reasons. Our calibration removes that hesitation without making the vehicle jumpy. The result is immediate, predictable throttle response that makes merging onto the N2 highway from an on-ramp, overtaking on single-lane roads, and climbing the Outeniqua Pass feel completely different. Many customers tell us it feels like a new vehicle.

FUEL ECONOMY

More power does not automatically mean higher consumption. Some owners see improved economy when added torque allows the Hilux to maintain speed with less throttle and fewer downshifts. The actual result depends on vehicle condition, load, route and driving style.

Fuel economy results vary depending on driving style, load, and conditions, and cannot be guaranteed.

The Hilux on the Garden Route

If you drive a Hilux in the Garden Route area, you already know the challenges. The stretch of the N2 between Mossel Bay and George climbs and descends through the Outeniqua Pass, with long gradients that expose the factory Hilux calibration's weaknesses. Fully loaded with a canopy, camping gear, or towing a trailer, the stock 2.4 GD6 struggles to maintain speed uphill without constantly downshifting and pushing the engine hard. The 2.8 GD6 handles it better, but still falls flat in the critical 1800-2500rpm band where the turbo is transitioning.

The factory calibration has to serve a broad range of markets, operating conditions, fuel qualities and vehicle uses. A vehicle-specific calibration lets ATM refine torque delivery, boost control, fuelling and gearbox behaviour around the exact Hilux in front of us instead of treating every 2.4 or 2.8 GD-6 as identical.

What a Remap Actually Changes

An ECU remap adjusts fuel injection timing, boost targets, injection duration and torque limiters inside the factory engine-management software. ATM chooses those targets for the vehicle's condition, hardware, fuel and intended use, retains the relevant protection strategies and verifies the finished delivery under controlled load.

For the Hilux 2.4 GD6, much of the useful improvement can be felt in the mid-range where overtaking, towing and gradient climbing place the greatest demand on the engine. We refine the torque delivery for a smoother, more predictable response, then verify the curve on the dyno.

Towing Performance

The Hilux is a working vehicle. Many of our customers in the Garden Route tow boats, caravans, trailers loaded with building materials, or horse boxes. Towing is where a remap makes the most dramatic difference, because you are asking the engine to work harder across a wider range of conditions. The additional torque from a remap means less downshifting, less strain at high RPM, better speed maintenance on inclines, and a more relaxed towing experience overall. If you have ever white-knuckled a loaded Hilux up the Montagu Pass with the temperature gauge climbing, you know exactly why this matters.

The 2.8 GD6 Advantage

The 2.8 GD-6 responds strongly to a well-specified calibration, with useful gains in mid-range torque, response and overtaking confidence. Where a client wants a more complete build, ATM and SNIPER can plan the supporting exhaust, intercooler or boost-pipe hardware together and calibrate the finished combination on the dyno.

What We Offer for Your Hilux

Every Hilux is assessed individually. Its condition, mileage, modifications, fuel, operating environment and intended use all inform the final calibration specification.

CUSTOM ECU REMAP

Custom calibration for stock-hardware Hilux. Optimised fuelling, boost, and torque delivery. The most popular option for daily drivers and towing applications.

HIGHER-OUTPUT CUSTOM TUNE

For Hilux models with appropriate supporting hardware such as an upgraded exhaust, intercooler or intake. The final specification is chosen for the complete build and intended use.

DPF SOFTWARE & PHYSICAL REMOVAL

On supported diesel Hilux models, ATM switches the DPF strategy and related regeneration or fault logic off in the ECU while SNIPER completes the required physical DPF or exhaust work.

EGR OFF & CODES OUT

The EGR command is switched off and the related EGR fault codes are removed within the vehicle-specific ECU calibration.

GEARBOX CALIBRATION

Optimised shift points and torque converter behaviour for the automatic transmission. Crisper shifts, less hunting between gears on gradients, and better towing response.

SNIPER RACING EXHAUST

Custom TIG-welded stainless steel exhaust systems, downpipes, and boost piping fabricated in-house. The perfect complement to a higher-output custom tune for maximum power delivery.

The ATM Difference

ATM brings long-standing vehicle-building experience, global calibration knowledge and in-house dyno verification together in one complete Hilux process.

Hilux Remap FAQ

Can you remap a 2.4 GD6 Hilux?

Yes. The Toyota Hilux 2.4 GD6 (2GD-FTV engine) is one of our most commonly tuned vehicles. We write custom ECU calibrations specifically for this engine, addressing the well-known flat spots and sluggish throttle response from factory. Expect noticeable improvements in mid-range torque, overtaking confidence, and overall driveability. Every calibration is verified under load on our in-house dyno.

How much power will I gain from a Hilux remap?

Results vary by model and condition. Our custom remap delivers a substantial, safe increase in torque and power across the rev range — the 2.8 GD6 responds even more strongly than the 2.4. The real-world difference is transformative: the flat spot between 1800-2500rpm that plagues stock Hilux models is eliminated, and the vehicle pulls with authority from low RPM through to redline. We tune for reliability first and show you your real before-and-after results on our in-house dyno in person, rather than publishing numbers online.

Is ECU remapping safe for my Hilux?

A professional calibration starts with a mechanically sound Hilux and respects the limits of its engine, gearbox, turbocharger and supporting hardware. We assess the vehicle first and verify the result under controlled load on our dyno.

Can ATM switch off the Hilux DPF and EGR systems?

On supported Hilux models, ATM can switch the DPF and EGR strategies off within the vehicle-specific ECU calibration, remove the related fault logic and coordinate physical DPF or exhaust work with SNIPER Racing where required.

How do you specify each calibration?

We do not sell a one-size-fits-all package. The final specification is chosen for the vehicle's ECU, gearbox, hardware, condition, fuel and intended use, then verified under load on our dyno.
