Why Tune Your BMW?

BMW factory calibrations have to work across different markets, fuel qualities, climates and vehicle specifications. On supported turbocharged diesel and petrol platforms, ATM develops the calibration for the exact software, hardware, condition and intended use, then verifies the finished result under controlled load on our in-house dyno.

We tune for reliability first. Our heavy-roller dyno is calibrated to measure at the wheels. Manufacturer figures are normally quoted at the engine and drivetrain loss varies, so the meaningful comparison is the verified change between the baseline and final run on the same vehicle, dyno and session.

BMW Engine Platforms We Specialise In

Understanding the engine platform inside your BMW is crucial to getting the remap right. Different engine families respond differently to calibration changes, and the approach that works on an N55 is not the same approach that works on a B47. Here is a closer look at the major BMW engine platforms we tune at ATM Chiptuning.

The N55 is BMW's beloved single-turbo inline-six petrol engine. Found in the F30 335i, F32 435i, and the original F87 M2, the N55 responds beautifully to a custom remap. The turbocharger has significant headroom, and with careful boost and timing adjustments, a strong, safe lift in power is achievable while maintaining excellent reliability. For owners who have fitted a SNIPER Racing downpipe, a higher-output custom tune pushes the N55 even further, delivering a driving experience that rivals cars costing twice as much.

The B58 is the N55's successor and is widely regarded as one of the best turbo engines in production today. Found in the G20 M340i, G29 Z4 M40i, and current-generation X3 M40i, the B58 is a tuner's dream. Its closed-deck block and advanced turbo system give it remarkable strength. A custom B58 remap from ATM delivers a strong, safe lift in power over standard, with the power delivery remaining impressively smooth and linear. This is the engine that makes BMW owners fall in love with their cars all over again.

On the diesel side, the N47 and B47 four-cylinder engines power the 320d and 520d models that are among the most popular BMWs on South African roads. The Garden Route stretch of the N2, with its long highway sections and mountain passes like the Outeniqua, is exactly where a diesel remap shines. More mid-range torque means less gear hunting, more confident overtaking, and often improved fuel economy under steady-state cruising, though actual fuel savings depend on driving style and conditions. For the daily commuter or the long-distance traveller, a 320d or 520d remap is one of the most transformative modifications available.

The S55 and S58 M-division engines represent the pinnacle of BMW performance engineering. The twin-turbo S55 in the F80 M3 and F82 M4, and the S58 in the G80 M3 and G82 M4, are already potent from the factory. But BMW calibrates even these engines conservatively. A custom remap from ATM sharpens the throttle response, smooths the boost delivery at the top of the rev range, and extracts the additional power that the hardware is fully capable of supporting.
